Chemostratigraphy is the characterisation and correlation of sedimentary sequences utilising the inorganic geochemistry of over 50 elements. The Chemostrat approach provides detailed information on lithological sequences which other techniques would consider homogeneous. Applied to carbonate systems this approach can be utilised to provide information of position within a reef system based on sediment input and biogenic indicators. High resolution correlation and identification of growth stage boundaries. Elemental responses to level changes with both aerial and subareial event identification. Diagenesis including burial and hydrothermal modification.
The talk will also include an overview of how the technique can be combined with other approaches to greatly enhanced effect. There will be a slideshow explaining the fundamentals of how the technique works and giving specific examples on how this approach has been successfully applied to carbonate systems around the world.
This talk will introduce the concept of Chemostratigraphy and how it can be applied to solve a number of issues of correlation and characterization of carbonate systems. This will include the application to gain an understanding of the controls on facies and diagenesis, and then apply this understanding to subsurface geology.
