From Data to Decision: How Digital Implementation Impact Operational Efficiency in a Real-Time Drilling Analytics Center

Well construction activity in exploration wells can be quite challenging. It requires a great deal of technical and operational resources to ensure a smooth operation. Some challenges identified in exploration wells are limited offset reference and higher cost compared to other development campaigns; hence, continuous improvement in drilling practices to increase efficiency is needed. Pertamina Hulu Rokan, as one of the biggest operators in central Sumatra, has a commitment to continuously innovate and implement various new technologies to their operations to improve performance.

Excellent drilling operation execution and communication are essential to the well construction phase's success. A key factor in determining the operation's effectiveness is communication between the rig team and the team in town.

With the real-time streaming platform, personnel can access the rig status anytime anywhere, which speeds up communication and decision making. Technology has become the major facilitator for a significant change in drilling operations.

A centralized data and operations center is constructed to be a coordination center. Technical examination of ongoing operations and well performance monitoring will be conducted in the real-time drilling analytics center.

Operational efficiency is increased by using digitalization and technology. It is crucial to take the right preventive action before an issue arises. Pertamina Hulu Rokan adopted a solution that combined drilling analysis and interpretation in addition to performance monitoring. Performance tracking and improvement areas are made possible by performance monitoring analysis, which facilitated daily Key Performance Indicator (KPI) operations.

Thorough real-time drilling analysis and observation are being implemented, which capture the essential information during drilling, such as Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE), hydraulics, and torque and drag monitoring. We obtain comprehensive interpretation and can take appropriate action if abnormal conditions are observed.

In this paper we discuss the real-time drilling analytics center with various technology solutions to enhance drilling efficiency.
