13-3/8" surface casing batch setting operations on the KF Platform, Natuna Sea

Batch setting of the surface casings on a multi-well platform has proved to be both economically and technically advantageous and is the recommended approach for all developments of this nature. It can be shown that investing the time to batch set the surface casings at the start of such a project is advantageous to drilling efficiency, safety and production. On the KF Development Project, twelve strings of 13-3/8", casing were batch set after completing the first well. The total cost saving amounted to some $ 4.6 MM or 10% of the total drilling costs estimate. In addition to bringing production forward due to the time savings, the elimination of wellbore interference resulted in a significant safety benefit and offered the best opportunity to optimize high angle drilling and horizontal displacement. This paper summarizes the techniques used, their relative benefits and offers some guidelines on their application to similar projects.
