Advances in solids control system design for expensive muds

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 14th Ann. Conv., 1985

The cost of heavy weight, oil base, or highly treated water base muds is very sensitive to methods used for solids control. Recent developments in high efficiency shale shaker application and high speed centrifuge/technology have greatly widened the scope of solids control system designs which can reduce total drilling and mud costs. Mobil in Indonesia and elsewhere has applied these recent developments to replace older solids control systems with unitized packages which remove more of the fine drilled solids while reducing surface mud volume and connected horsepower. This paper presents the design parameters pilot test results, and field experiences which Mobil Oil Indonesia incurred in developing their systems for two rigs operating in North Sumatra.
