Alternative Sand Control Offering Cost Effective Solution in Tunu Field

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 40th Ann. Conv., 2016

Development of the shallow reservoir in Tunu field, Mahakam Block requires cost effective solutions to produce multi layered sandy reservoirs. Gravel Pack system has enabled production of thin layers with multi zone single trip gravel pack system. However, the system has reached its technical limits in terms of cost, number and spacing of completed zones and well deviation. Developing an alternative sand control solution is required to produce small marginal reservoirs and maximize recovery while maintaining robust sand control. The alternative system should reduce completion time and allow for completion in high departure well for producing hard to reach reserves. Shunt tube gravel pack system, shape memory polymer and Ceramic screen are considered as emerging alternative solutions to cut sand control cost. Multi Zone Shunt tube screen will reduce completion time significantly due to the ability to perform simultaneous gravel pack pumping in a single trip. In the other hand, shape memory polymer and Ceramic Screen will also reduce the completion time even further by removing the necessity of gravel pack. To validate the use of the three alternatives, trial in cased hole architecture was planned. Extensive work on well design was performed. Completion design was optimized to protect completions while maintaining acceptable productivity. Special clean up procedure was established to avoid sand failure. To date two wells have been completed using Shunt tube system, four wells using ceramic screen and one well with shape memory polymer. The success of these initial trials gives a good base for confirming completion cost reduction. Further trials are planned to confirm the robustness of sand control and productivity.
