Arun Field supervisory control and data acquisition system

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 11th Ann. Conv., 1982

Mobil Oil Indonesia, as a production sharing contractor for Pertamina, is producing the Arun Gas Field in Aceh Province, North Sumatra. A Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system will contribute to the safety and operating efficiency of the field. The computer based system will provide information and control capability to allow central coordination in the operation of the field. The Arun Field will have production facilities at four locations called clusters. The gas and condensate from the clusters will feed into a central location named Point 'A'.Each operating cluster has a Data Acquisition System (DAS) in its control room. Each DAS has four microprocessor based Remote Terminal Units (RTUs). The RTUs continuosly monitor many aspects of the cluster operation and print reports and alarms.A minicomputer system at Point 'A' will communicate with the RTUs. It will regularly scan each RTU to get the latest information that the RTUs have gathered. This information will be stored in the computer's data base. The Point 'A' computer system consists of two identical minicomputer systems. One is the primary system. The other is a backup system that will automatically take over if the primary computer fails. The computer will output information through printers and video terminals (CRTs). These will be located in the Point, 'A' control room, fhe cluster control rooms and the Medan office. Many of the CRTs will be used to present color semigraphic displays of process operations. The SCADA system will allow overall monitoring and coordination of action to properly Ealance operations within and between the clusters. The system will give Point 'A' the ability to respond immediately and effectively to an emergency-using real time information from the clusters.
