Determination of turbidite facies and 3D model based on outcrops and petrographic description in Mahakam area and implication as hydrocarbon source rock in Kutai Basin

The Study area is located in Samarinda town, East Borneo, Mahakam Area. This area is known for the shelf – marine slope and lobe fan turbidite deposit widespread in west Samarinda at the top of Separi Anticline, Pamaluan Formation. The Pamaluan Formation is Late Oligocene – Early Miocene in age. The Babulu Limestone Complex was deposited conformably above it as a shelf break. The Pamaluan Formation was conformably deposited above the latter, subdivided into two facies, slope turbidite facies (comprising channel slope, levee, and overbank) and fan lobe (comprising inner lobe, middle lobe and outer lobe). The slope channel is characterized by medium – coarse sandstone, rich clay pebble and observed flute casts as debris flow in bottom of the sand. In levee deposits the lithology observed is, fine – medium sandstone rich organic in shalestone between sand layer. The fan facies characteristic closely described by Bouma sequence that has Ta, Tb, Tc and Tef. Ta-Tb is inner fan, Tb-Tc is middle fan and Tef is outer fan – basin floor (Bouma 1962). Five measured section traverses from west to east near Samarinda town and 10 outcrop samples analyses form the basis of this study (Figure 1). Samples were analysed using petrography, paleontology and stratigraphy. The objective of the study was to determine the facies characteristics, distribution geometry, and describe in model from previous classification study similar to this study to provide an overview of the field-outcrop perspective in relationship with source rock characteristics.
