Field study for development and EOR application Z-1300, Kuala Simpang Barat Structure, North Sumatra

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 23rd Ann. Conv., 1994

The Kuala Simpang Barat Structure is located approximately 57 km north-west of Pangkalan Brandan, in Aceh province (Figure 1). This oil field was discovered in 1979 and has been produced from the sands of the Lower Keutapang Formation. The sandstone oil reservoir 2-1300 consists of two zones, separated by a thin shale sequence. This reservoir has a Northwest-Southeast dip orientation in the direction of the anticline's axis, with a thinning in the west-east direction. Potential production optimization of this zone was identified from the field development pattern, its geology and the reservoir's production characteristics gained from the years of oil production. The technique used to evaluate field's potential EOR development is as follows :1. A Geological Model was developed, covering the stratigraphy, structure, reservoir flow pattern, the interpreted depositional environment and the reservoir facies distribution.2. A Reservoir Model was developed covering the formation type, and fluid content (based on core analysis and interpreted well-logs), together with the reservoir drive characteristics.3. A combined Reservoir-Geology model was developed which provided calculated reservoir properties(Vsh,o,Sw). As a result of this data, structural, iso-net sand, iso-porosity, iso-permeability and iso-saturation maps were produced. From the above three models, the overall reservoir picture was generated with the final result being a new revised hydrocarbon reserve. This is the basis for a revised field development plan and the detailed reservoir simulation for the EOR project.
