Geng North Discovery In Deep Water Kutei Basin

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 49th Ann. Conv., 2025

In October 2023, Eni announced a major gas discovery from the Geng North-1 exploration well, drilled in the North Ganal Working Area approximately 85 km offshore East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The structure is estimated to hold over 5 Tcf of gas in place and 400 million barrels of condensate, ranking it among the largest global discoveries of 2023.

The Geng North-1 well reached a total depth of 5,025 meters in 1,947 meters of water and encountered approximately 50 meters of gross gas pay in a Miocene-aged sandstone reservoir with excellent petrophysical characteristics. A successful drill stem test (DST) demonstrated production capabilities of 80–100 MMSCFD of gas and 5–6 kbbl/d of condensate.

A fast-track development strategy has been adopted for the Geng North field, which has been designated a Proyek Strategis Nasional (National Strategic Project) by the Indonesian government. The Determination of Exploration Status (PSE) and Discovery Declaration were submitted in February 2024, followed by the Plan of Development (PoD), which received official approval in August 2024, just 10 months after discovery. This unprecedented timeline was achieved thanks to strong collaboration and full support from SKK Migas and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (Migas).
