Handil HRWP Case Study: Quantifying Range of Injection Rates to Achieve high Perforation PackFactor and high Net Pressure Gained

Many Handil wells have been completed using a single-trip multi-zone gravel pack completion system (STMZ). In a typical Handil well, there are several zones to be produced (usually 4 to 5 zones in one well). Each zone is treated with a high rate water pack (HRWP). A HRWP completion is expected to have improved productivity (lower skin) when compared to a conventional gravel pack. A HRWP - designed and performed correctly - should extend perforation tunnels by creating small fractures fill with highly permeable proppant. In this way, cementing and perforating operations are bypassed near wellbore damage created during drilling, thus ensuring better production from the well. This paper analyses past jobs performed in the Handil field and is intended to be used as a guide for field engineers involved in the design and supervision of pumping HRWP. It introduces a methodology of determining a range of injection rates of one field or reservoir from past jobs, and these numbers will be applied to the wells in the same field to achieve a successful HRWP in terms of low skin completion.
