Indonesia gas hydrate potential of Sunda Strait case study : future energy or geohazard?

Recently, Indonesia has discovered more than 850 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of potential gas hydrate deposits as a possible alternative energy resource. It is predicted that gas hydrates will have a key role in global energy needs within the next 30 years. Despite many studies which have been conducted to asses gas hydrate potential and quantity, further studies are needed to evaluate all aspects of gas hydrate occurrence, production, and value. This paper is focused on the characteristics of gas hydrates found in the Sunda Strait, Java Region, Indonesia. Our research uses BSR (Bottom Simulating Reflector) results compilee with primary data (what types of data?) in combination with previous research(cite research used here).. Potential hazards that need assessing associated with production of natural gas from methane hydrates include ground subsidence, methane release, slope instability, and water and sand production. An additional area of interest is the opportunity for sequestering carbon dioxide as a subsurface hydrate. In addition to producing natural gas without dissociating the hydrate, this technology would result in stable, long-term sequestration of carbon dioxide. Keyword: Gas Hydrate.
