Petroleum System and Pre-Tertiary Basement Reservoir Potential of South Palembang Sub-Basin, Indonesia

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 46th Ann. Conv., 2022

The pre-tertiary framework of South Sumatra comprises four terranes: East Malaya, Malacca, Mergui, and Woyla terranes. Pre-tertiary basement reservoirs have become regionally one of the most important exploration targets in South Sumatra Basin, with several successful developments in Jambi (Jabung), North Palembang (Sakakemang) and Central Palembang (Sumpal, Suban and Dayung) sub-basin. However, the basement in South Palembang sub-basin has not been considered exploration potential. The Musi high is in the South Palembang sub-basin. In the Early Tertiary, the basin comprises several large paleo-basement highs. One of the most recognized highs is the Musi High, where many oil and gas fields have been produced in the carbonates of the Baturaja Formation. At present, production in this conventional play may already have declined. Hence the need to explore a new play concept in hydrocarbon prospecting. The purpose of this study is to understand the petroleum system aspects with an integrated exploration method involving analyses of Gas-Chromatography (GC) of two oil samples from the pre-tertiary basement, mud log, petrography, FMI and wireline logs from 5 wells as representative, and 2D seismic interpretations applied to assess the possible presence of basement reservoir prospects. In addition, an exploration well has been drilled and has provided a big opportunity for basement reservoir play. This study illustrates the method used to evaluate basement reservoir characterization at the early stage of exploration.
