Preliminary study of epoxy-based polymer for water shut-off application

This research is the continuation of the suggestion from a representative in OGRINDO, a research consortium in the Bandung Institute of Technology under the financial support of oil and service companies to use an epoxy-based polymer for water shut-off application after its success in sand control applications. In sand control, epoxy bonds to the sand grains and is the main compound in the solidification process of unconsolidated sand, where the viscosity change in the epoxy resin is also fulfilling the function of a water shut-off agent. The epoxy-based substance is synthesised with a hardener (triethylenetetraamine) in a 50:50 concentration in acetone. Gelation time is a key parameter in water shut-off applications because the composed substance must be lean at the time of injection (this experiment results 2 cP), then it becomes dramatically more viscous in an extreme mode after particular period, called the gelation time (point). This gelation parameter is measured periodically using a Fann-VG and Rheometer and visually observed in transparent bottle so that the observer could easily do surveillance of the substance’s fluidity by shaking and reversing the bottle’s position. An initial study shows that 50% (v/v) of epoxy and 50% (v/v) of hardener diluted in acetone results 7 days (168 hours gelation time) after exposure to atmosphere conditions.
