Reservoir modeling of shallow zone in Handil field, Mahakam delta, East Kalimantan

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 32nd Ann. Conv., 2008

Handil Field, one of the largest fields in the Mahakam Delta has been producing oil and gas since 1975. Handil Field has six reservoir zones which are respectively from older to younger, Deep Zone, Lower Zone, Main Zone, Upper Zone, Shallow Zone, and Very Shallow Zone. The Main Zone is the has produced the most oil, but recently, production is declining. To maintain the production rate of the field, it is planed to produce the Shallow and Very Shallow Zones. To optimize that production, it is necessary to understand the character of those reservoirs. This paper presents the sequence stratigraphy analysis, isopach mapping, and 3D porosity modeling of the reservoir characterization of the Shallow Zone. The characterization is based mainly on log data from eighty three wells in the south production zone of the field. Sequence stratigraphy has been done to correlate the reservoir down to the flooding surface. Four reservoir intervals within parasequences can be identified. Electrofacies analysis has been used to define the reservoir in each parasequence. Three electrofacies can be recognized, they are blocky shape, bell shape, and funnel shape. The blocky and bell shape are interpreted as channel, while the funnel shape, which generally thin, is interpreted as crevasse splay associated with the channel. Isopach mapping shows the reservoir trending from NNW in one main channel then splitting into three distributary channels in the SSE appearing like bird foot deltaic morphology. Reservoir properties comprising shale volume (Vshale) and porosity have been generated in each well for 3D properties modeling. A geostatistical approach, especially variogram analysis, Sequential Gaussian Simulation, and reservoir geometry modeling have been used to determine the reservoir properties.
