Structure of the North Banda-Molucca area from multichannel seismic reflection data

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 12th Ann. Conv., 1983

The North Banda-Molucca Area is located at the junction of three main converging plates. Pacific. Australian-Indian and Eurasian. It is a mosaic of remnant and active island arcs and of continental and oceanic fragments.Recent multichannel seismic data were aimed at studying the complex structural pattern of this area and suggest late Neogene to Recent movements of blocks.NW-SW late Neogene to present thrusts and anticlines are observed in the NE part of the South Halmahera basin. South of the Halmahera blocks, several sinistral, transcurrent, reverse faults prolong the Sorong fault. From the deep Salawati basin to North Buru a large tectonic zone with mud diapirs is delimited. Due to collision, possible remnants of the Molucca Sea Plate outcrop in the eastern arm of Sulawesi and Obi Island.
