Successful Comprehensive-Unconventional Solution to Bypass Solid/LCM Plugging in Horizontal Screen Completion

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 43rd Ann. Conv., 2019

The XYZ-01 well drilled horizontally penetrating the oil zone, shale section and ended in water zone. Lost control materials, calcium carbonates, were added due to lost circulation during drilling the productive section. The well was completed with sand screen and the water zone was isolated with ECP and bullnose plug. However, the well producing 100% water since the beginning. Water Flow Log was then conducted to identify where and how the water is coming to the wellbore. The Water Flow Log (WFL) result showed that all the water was coming from the water zone. No liquid contribution observed coming from the screen area (oil zone). A mechanical plug was then installed to isolate the failed bullnose. In order to remove the suspected plugged screen, acid was pumped to the well to remove blockage but obtained very low flow from the well and found some sediment samples. The second acid job was then pumped again to the well but no improvement obtained. Laboratory tests were done and shows that sediment have only about 60% solubility in HCl-HF solution and was only 50% with other type chemical therefore mechanical solution was evaluated to effectively bypass the plugged screen by perforation. Pro - cons and risk analysis shown that the perforation job option giving the best economic value. Post perforation job, the well producing 1200 BOPD from previously zero.
