Sustainable Operation Implementation for Eliminating Contaminants in Produced Sand and Creating Value Added Product By Designing Oil-In-Sand Extraction Unit in Integration With Huff and Puff Activity at Marginal Heavy Oil Field

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 46th Ann. Conv., 2022

By relying on Huff and Puff (H&P) activity and Sand Bailing Job to extend run life of its production, Batang Field struggles to deal with massive oil contaminated produced sand. Laboratory testing showed that these wastes was categorized toxic according to Indonesian regulation. Under these kind of characters, Batang Field was facing complicated situation, for instance, high cost for third party waste processing nearly USD 372,000/year, whereas the sand itself is a common material for facility maintenance activity especially in civil engineering. Therefore, the goal is to separate oil contaminants to obtain clear sand that complies with the toxicity level based on regulation. Coinciding with this condition, some of the bled out steam, for pressure control and safety measure in H&P unit, was streamed into the Oil-in-Sand Extraction Unit (OSE) unit via bypass line then extraction was started. Trapped oil inside the sand floated up then flowed over the weir into the Oil Collection Chamber. After completing the program, obtained clear sand according to standard toxicity test is categorized as non-toxic material. Collected oil then trucked back to processing plant. For internal trial reasons, the sand product was mixed with cement and gravels to build a sample of concrete paving block and tested under compressive strength test. The result showed that the paving block could withstand 10 MPa force that complies Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for Category D paving block. After all is said and done, sustainable operations practically could be achieved in Batang Field by creating effort on energy management and waste product utilization. Even though further regulator’s approval is needed, the trial also showed a success of further potency on creating value added product.
