The Progressive Illitization Process, Diagenetic Mechanism and Its Effect on Reservoir Quality based on SEM, Burial History, and Simultaneous Multi-Well Analysis: A Case Study in Sangasanga Block, Kutai Basin, East Kalimantan

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 43rd Ann. Conv., 2019

The Kutai Basin is a huge basin containing prolific oil and gas fields in Indonesia. Exploration conducted in the research area was performed in a field with Miocene age in clastic rock of reservoir zones in the Balikpapan Formation. The primary data analysis included simultaneous multi-well analysis, burial history analysis, and the distribution of clay minerals. To support the analysis, the XRD, Petrography, SEM, Ro%, Well Log, Rock Age, and routine core reports data were also used as secondary data. The provenances are derived from plutonic felsic igneous rocks with 77.5% composition of monocrystalline quartz. The volcanic rock which has characteristics of composing by feldspar minerals (6.24%) and lithic (16.25%) is indicating that rocks are derived from recycled orogenic. The diagenesis of clay minerals consists of two stages: early diagenesis and burial diagenesis. The early diagenesis stage occurs at temperatures ranging from 20 to 85 C and in the Ro% range from 0% to 0.65% at depths of 0 ft to 6500 ft. The burial stage diagenesis with 70% percent illitization occurred in a temperature range of more than 85?C with Ro% range of more than 0.65% at a depth of over 6500 ft. Illitization from illite mineral is formed up to 50% and generally begins at the Middle Miocene age and those formed up to 70% start at the Late Miocene age. The illitization process which marks the beginning of the burial diagenesis stage and also marks the top of overflowing pressure is initiated from the formation of illite minerals that cover the grain and reduces the porosity and permeability of the rocks. In the distribution of illitization, the reservoir quality from the southwest to the northeast is getting worse. Illitization in the northeast of the field begins in the prospective zones which become the purpose of the exploration, and there are the E, F and G zones that are included in this research.
