Tunu Field - sustainable development

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 30th Ann. Conv., 2005

TUNU is a giant gas field located in the Mahakam Delta, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. This field has been developed since 1988 by Total E&P Indonesie and its produced gas is supplied to Bontang LNG Plant.Development of TUNU field is done in phased manner, at onshore swampy area and shallow water off shore area of the Mahakam Delta. The onshore part is presently located in an area where the aquaculture development is very extensive. The migrant and local people have taken initiative to develop aquaculture in this area and these lead to an uncontrolled and extensive deforestation that worsened the natural erosion phenomenon of the Delta.Oil and gas industry is an important resource representing approximately 20 % of the Indonesian total export, however shrimp farming and fishing are the main economic activities of the local population. This condition leads to a potential conflict of interest. Thus an urgent action is required to prevent the situation from becoming worst.Commitments of TOTAL Group and Total E&P Indonesie towards environmental and social impacts are clear and firmed. Each phase of TUNU field development always began by an Environmental Baseline Study (EBS) and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), where all potential effects are studied in each phases of the development, from land acquisition to operational phase.Existing shrimp ponds in the vicinity of the new installation are acquitted from the owners including acquisition of buffer zones to prevent the installation area from the future shrimp ponds installation.Acquisition of compensation area is also done with a ratio of 1 to 2 of the cleared land area for new installation and follow by extensive replanting program.Appropriate procedure during land clearing is set up and followed which include disposal of vegetal wastes. River bank protection/restoration, setting up of green belt and communication links with the local communities are built up and maintained. Various procedures related to environment and socioeconomics aspects, during drilling and operation existed and strictly carried out. This paper concludes that although TUNU field is congested and very sensitive, but COMPANY commitment on Environmental, Social and Economical aspects as three pillars of the Sustainable Development will always be maintained.
