Unlocking Potential of Low Resistivity Pay Sand, “Galaxy” Sand in “Andromeda” Field at WK Rokan: Further Opportunity and Challenges

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 46th Ann. Conv., 2022

“Andromeda” field is one of primary field located in Wilayah Kerja (WK) Rokan, PT. Pertamina Hulu Rokan with first oil flowed in 1972. “Andromeda” field has multiple reservoirs with cumulative oil production was 76.8 MMSTB with RF 41.6%. Mostly the field production is delivered from high quality reservoirs. The upside potential, “Galaxy” Sand, in “Andromeda” Field, previously is not as primary target due to “flat resistivity” profile. This sand could be as the Low Resistivity Pay (LRP) zone due to difficulty to determine hydrocarbon and water zone from conventional log. ANDR#49 is current active producer well producing single from “Galaxy” Sand with shown good initial production. It was indicated in the past “Galaxy” Sand was overlooked, ignored, and consider wet. Unfortunately, there was very limited data, no conventional core available and other data such as NMR, Image Log, etc. The LRP reflected of lamination shaly-sand reservoirs and very fined grain based on Side Wall Core (SWC). Creative idea was implemented by integrated cut off oil proven resistivity (~ 7 ohm), swab test, oil shown (2-3 dot SWC), and historical production data. Re-calculation of water saturation using Indonesian Formula and Simandoux shown better result to confirm the upside potential of this sand. Initial flow unit facies map shown “Galaxy” Sand was deposited into 3 facies: Proximal Bar, Medial Bar, and Distal Bar Facies. The LRP zone is deposited in Distal Bar Facies and located in the attic structure. It is indicated for further opportunity to optimize the “Galaxy Sand” by revisit and open new zone with potential produce with low fluid rate and low water cut. By having creative and integrated diligent deep review provide an opportunity to unlock potential resource of LRP zone. Additional data such as NMR, Image Log, etc., is needed to increase confident level of optimization to meet the economic criteria.
