Water injection in Handil field

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 9th Ann. Conv., 1980

The Handil field is located in the delta of the Mahakam river in East Kalimantan. 150 sand reservoirs lie between 500 and 2900 meters. They are tidal to fluvial deltaic plain sediments of Middle to Late Miocene age. The areal closure is 40 square kilometers. A major fault cuts the field into 2 compartments. 190 oil blocks have been recognized. The discovery well was drilled in April 1974. Production started through a few wells in June 1975 at 40.000 STBID. A full capacity of 180.000 STB/D was obtained in December 1976. So far, 70 oil producers have been completed. The current offtake rate is 163.000 STB/D and the cumulative oil production 216MMSTB. Early 1977 it was recognized that fluid injection would be required to supplement the natural energy in some reservoirs (severe pressure drops), and maximise oil recovery. A screening study was carried out during the first half of 1977 to select the best scheme to increase oil recovery in Handil.
