Improve Oil Recovery with Incidental Vibroseismic in Tight Oil Reservoir

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 49th Ann. Conv., 2025

The large potential for oil and coal in the Kalimantan and Sumatra regions means that the working areas of oil and coal companies are close to each other. A similar thing also happened between PT Pertamina Ep (Oil Company) and PT Alfara Delta Persada (Public Coal Company) that located in the North Sangasanga area. PT Alfara Delta Persada obtained mining operating License in the Anggana Area from March 2017 to March 2027, Rock Blasting activities will become even more massive in the northern Sangasanga Area.Based on existing literature, rock blasting work and the movement of heavy equipment can cause impacts such as Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Vibroseismic activity. Vibroseismic is one of the EOR methods that has been developed. The vibroseismic method uses elastic waves as a tool to move reservoir rock particles, causing the fluid in the pore to move as well. The oil trapped in the pores of the rock as oil droplets will merge and move. The movement of the oil droplets creates an oil stream, which increases the oil's mobility. This results in improve oil recovery in oil wells.

Well X was perforated in October 2005 at the tight oil reservoir D-11 interval 842-845 m. The results of the well perforation no flow oil, so the D-11 layer was squeezed in 2018. From 2018 to 2023, PT Alfara Delta Persada blasting activities have increased with total coal production reaching 2 million tons. The well X was perforated again in July 2023, and there was an increase in oil production to 120 bopd and based on nodal analysis there was an increase in the productivity index of 2.5 times.
