Navigating the Depths: Enhancing Deepwater Exploration Drilling with Logging While Drilling (LWD) Technology - Novel Approach of Deepwater Offshore Exploration Well in Offshore Andaman, Indonesia

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 49th Ann. Conv., 2025

This paper outlines the novel approach of utilizing Logging While Drilling (LWD) technology in Offshore Andaman, Indonesia. Emphasizing paramount concerns for operational safety and efficiency, LWD deployment ensured business continuity and upheld corporate reputation. Real-time formation evaluation facilitated precise decision-making, mitigating operational risks. This study underscores the significant contributions of LWD technology to overall drilling performance, particularly enhancing the safety and quality standards.

LWD technologies are seamlessly integrated into drilling programs to enhance decision-making during operations. Real-time LWD measurements include: • Quadrupole Sonic provides formation independent compressional and shear data, aiding in surface seismic calibration and assessing pore pressure, informing decisions on 11-3/4” liner contingency requirements. • Seismic LWD tools offer lookahead capabilities, safeguarding against unintended reservoir penetration. • Resistivity at the bit serves as a precise drilling guide, efficiently identifying the top of the target zone. These advanced functionalities not only optimize drilling processes but also enhance safety and efficiency, ensuring accurate decision making and minimizing operational risks throughout the drilling program.

The successful drilling of deepwater exploration well was made possible through the strategic integration of Logging While Drilling (LWD) technologies. By harnessing LWD capabilities, precise pore pressure measurements were obtained, obviating the requirement of 11- 3/4" liner, and guaranteeing optimal mud weight and Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD) maintenance across all drilling sections. In the intermediate section, the incorporation of seismic lookahead technology played a pivotal role, offering accurate lookahead of the reservoir top with an impressive 4-meter accuracy. This preemptive identification mitigated the risk of inadvertent reservoir penetrations, safeguarding against potential drilling complications and preserving reservoir integrity. Furthermore, the synergy between seismic lookahead and resistivity measurements at the bit provided a dual layer of assurance in determining the reservoir top. This collaborative approach not only heightened the precision of top reservoir identification but also facilitated the acquisition of high-quality formation core samples for subsequent reservoir evaluation. Overall, the comprehensive utilization of LWD technologies underscores their transformative impact on deepwater exploration drilling operations, highlighting Mubadala Energy unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation in the oil and gas sector.

This paper substantiates the Company's novel approach of utilizing Logging While Drilling (LWD) technologies to assure the success of deepwater exploration well in Offshore Andaman, serving as a benchmark for future exploration drilling operations. The study highlights the transformative impact of LWD technologies in enhancing drilling efficiency and safety standards.
