Kalimantan has a great potential in oil and gas industry, presenting promising opportunities for exploration and production. Production enhancement can be achieved through the implementation of Stimulation. One of the well-known stimulation methods is hydraulic fracturing. It’s expected that hydraulic fracturing will require significant investment and extensive equipment. There is a method similar to hydraulic fracturing known as Multicycle Shear Dilation Fracturing.
Multicycle Shear Dilation Fracturing is stimulation method to enhance oil and gas production by repeatedly opening the fractures in reservoir. This method focuses on developing fractures through shear movement multiple times. Multicycle Shear Dilation Fracturing require simpler equipment and lower cost compared to hydraulic fracturing. This method proved effective in improving hydrocarbons production from reservoir and minimizing extensive resources and equipment.
This paper is aimed to share the success story from Multicycle Shear Dilation Fracturing in Sanga-Sanga Field, East Kalimantan. Based on the same principle as hydraulic fracturing, this method is effective in fields with shaly sandstone reservoir and has been increasing production, through a sequence of processes involving Breakdown Test, Step Rate Test, Main Fracturing Treatment and Displacement. The fluids and material used are low viscosity gel and frac sand.
Basen on the experiences that has been implemented in several wells in Sanga-Sanga Field, East Kalimantan, it is concluded that the application of Multicycle Shear Dilation Fracturing has proven to be a promising stimulation treatment to extend reservoir contact and increase production.
