Tangguh LNG is located about 3,000 kilometers east of Jakarta. Flights and land transport only reach Babo, a small town on the edge of Bintuni Bay. From there, access to Tangguh is exclusively available through water. There are very few transportation options, service providers and supply routes available, making Tangguh a hugely challenging and logistically complex site.
It is no secret that LNG site is a high-risk environment to work in. That is why at bp, safety comes first and always will. Tangguh LNG plant runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At any given time, there are project activities, drilling and seismic going on alongside production. At its peak, there are up to 12,000 personnel working at Tangguh. An integral part of safety measures is making sure bp has medical evacuation (medevac) capabilities anytime, for all types of medical emergency, including the most life-threatening conditions.
Given the extreme remoteness of the site, the closest city with a medical facility for severe injuries or illnesses – where medevac is often required – is Makassar, approximately 1,600 km away. The challenge is transporting an injured worker to get immediate medical attention, as quickly as possible, where road access is not adequate, and transportation is limited.
Despite all these hurdles, between 2019 until August 2024, a total of 203 personnel were safely evacuated from Tangguh for medical treatment. This was achieved even though bp does not have a dedicated medevac aircraft. Instead, bp created a sophisticated process involving boats and aircraft, coordination with doctors and paramedics, emergency response team, marine, aviation, security, and the Government of Indonesia’s Port Authority as the regulator.
At present, bp remains the only oil and gas operator in Eastern Indonesia with the capability to meet evacuation time targets to medical referral centres, helping everyone's safe return to their families.
