SUMMARY:

Gross Rock Volume (GRV) is often reported as a single deterministic number, yet it is controlled by uncertain structure, depth conversion, contacts and spatially variable geometry. In complex geological settings, velocity uncertainty can translate directly into structural mis-positioning and material volumetric risk. This talk explains why geostatistics provides the rigorous framework needed to quantify GRV together with its uncertainty, rather than relying on one apparently precise structural realization.

Using practical subsurface examples, the presentation will connect velocity-model uncertainty, geological consistency and spatial correlation to stochastic structural modelling and GRV distributions. Additional slides will introduce the fundamental theory of geostatistics, including spatial continuity, variograms, conditional simulation and uncertainty propagation, and show how multiple geologically plausible realizations support P10/P50/P90 volumetrics and better decisions.

 Who Should Attend:

  • Geoscientists, geophysicists, geomodellers and reservoir engineers involved in volumetrics and resource estimation.
  • Exploration, appraisal and development professionals who use depth maps, structural models or GRV in decisions.
  • Technical leaders and decision-makers who need to understand the uncertainty behind reported hydrocarbon volumes

 What you’ll get :

  • A practical understanding of why a single deterministic GRV can be misleading and where hidden volumetric risk originates.
  • A clear workflow for moving from depth and structural uncertainty to multiple geological realizations and a GRV probability distribution.
  • Practical insight into how poorly quantified GRV uncertainty can lead to misallocated capital, incorrect well placement, suboptimal development decisions and value destruction.
  • A framework for using GRV uncertainty to support better exploration, appraisal and development decisions.
