A Novel Development Concept for CO2-EOR in South Sumatra

The opportunity for applying CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in Indonesia has been under discussion for several years, but the high cost and financial risk have hampered its development until today. The full potential for CO2 EOR to increase oil recovery factor will only be realized if CO2 supply options can be developed for CO2 EOR projects. Value chains linking sources of CO2 to appropriate oil field targets are expected to be the key enabler. This paper describes a novel development concept for CO2 EOR in South Sumatra through integration of technical and non-technical across the capture-transport-injection. The concept aimed to ensure that the potentially competing operational requirements for capture and EOR usage are reconciled, and that commercial consideration is addressed. A total 127 oil fields as potential to use CO2 for EOR in South Sumatra have been assessed. The prospective CO2 sources could come from CO2 stripped from natural gas, by-product from industrial plants, and CO2 captured from coal-based power plant flue gas. Building the infrastructure for CO2 transportation is based the order of reservoirs will be connected with the pipeline networks as it will justify the required investment and lower the cost per ton of transported CO2 as well as to ensure the project lifespan is long enough. Grouping fields into cluster is needed to deliver this objective. Three major oil field clusters have been developed. The potential recoverable oil is approximately 350 MMstb over 23 years of CO2 EOR operation with a positive total discounted NPV.
