Achieving Sustainable Oil & Gas Operations: A Strategy to Meet Mature Sustainability Performance

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 43rd Ann. Conv., 2019

The upstream oil & gas sector has an immense role in providing reliable & affordable energy to drive the continued growth of our economy. On the other hand, it needs to mitigate the potential negative impacts of operations in an appropriate manner. Therefore, many upstream Oil & Gas companies voluntarily report their sustainability performance and provide continuous progress updates. In Indonesia, this practice is part of the companies goals in pursuing and achieving compliance during PROPER evaluation. Unfortunately, most companies are still relying on lagging metrics and do not have adequate maturity of sustainability production systems in place. Thus, companies need to enhance their commitment to addressing sustainability issues along with their business interests. This is not easy. Each company needs to define holistic strategies. As the first stage, a company needs to put sustainability at the heart of decision-making and ensure the alignment between the company; vision & mission, the company; sustainable production goals and objectives, and the company; baseline indicators that are used. Then, the company needs to strengthen the systemic collaboration, both within the internal organization and among stakeholders. The third stage is to set challenging performance indicators that drive the company further and more innovatively in sustainability performance. The performance should be considered as SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound). By implementing it consistently, a company is expected to become more profitable, i.e. low risk, higher productivity, more revenue, fewer materials, less waste, less turn over, and less energy use. In the end, a company will reach mature sustainability production (level 4 or 5 of Lowell Center for Sustainability Production) by providing broad sustainability to society, gain competitive advantage and be more conscious and adaptive.
