Arafura Sea seismic Processing: Importance of Iterating Velocity Analysis and Integrating Regional Geology to Counter Signal Masking by major Unconformities

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 34th Ann. Conv., 2010

Until recently the extent of the Arafura Basin in the Eastern part of Indonesia had not been fully recognized. The sparse seismic data over the region yielded few coherent images below a strong Base Cretaceous Unconformity event. This was interpreted to mean much of the area was ancient platform with no exploration potential. This paper presents practical experiences of how careful velocity analysis in the seismic processing flow was combined with regional geologic knowledge to produce seismic images in what was previously a no-data-zone. Imaging which has been a key factor in opening the Arafura Basin for exploration.
