Basement reservoir play concept and its potential in Western Indonesia

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 39th Ann. Conv., 2015

Basement is generally non-productive and typically draws little attention from explorationists, because in most instances, basement has zero to very poor reservoir characteristics, hence it is mostly non-productive or uneconomic. Basement exploration data is limited since the tendency worldwide has been to terminat drilling prior to penetrating basement. On the other hand, in Indonesia and Vietnam basement in some basins oil has been produced from basement reservoir. By 1984, Beruk Northeast Well No. 1 in Central Sumatra had produced in excess of 1,100,000 barrels of oil and 42 MMCF of associated gas (Koning and Darmono, 1984). In that well comprises fractured metaquartzites, worthy of careful consideration as potential oil reservoir (Koning and Darmono, 1984). This paper discussed the play concept of basement reservoir and its potential in Western Indonesia.
