Continuing the Zero Water Discharge Program in Heavy Oil Operating Unit PT CPI with Waste Water Disposal Project

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 40th Ann. Conv., 2016

The Duri field of PT. Chevron Pacific Indonesia (CPI) implements Zero Water Discharge (ZEWADI) project by injecting waste water in disposal wells. The Waste Water Disposal (WWD) project will recommend the best alternative to increase a water disposal capacity to P90 water forecast and meanwhile remain compliant all time. As steam reduces and asset development projects continue, the water disposal continues to be constrained and it requires expansion. The WWD project is facility intensive and requires detailed alignment with the sub-surface alternatives. The Water disposal project continues to be the most value adding activities in the Heavy Oil Operating Unit (HOOU), PT CPI, because in addition to complying with ZEWADI, it also supports production increase. The project is separated in several packages (tranches), the tranche 1 & 2 have been completed, the tranche 3 is in a construction phase, and the tranche 4 of the project is still in an engineering phase, and will likely become the last major expansion executed prior to PSC expiration. Therefore, the design capacity of tranche 4 is intended to dispose the entire excess water stream. The main scope of the project is to drill new disposal wells and build new disposal facilities. In tranche 3 & 4, to achieve the required waste water disposal capacity in a most economical and fastest approach, the project implements several strategies to build the Disposal Injection Facilities (DIF) and improve the pumping capacity, which includes converting ex-steam generator pumps into water disposal pumps, utilizing un-used/spare pumps in some facilities to become water disposal pumps, and purchasing some HPS pumps. By implementing the strategies, WWD project currently achieved a disposal capacity of 515 MBWPD and at the completion of tranche 4 it will have a pumping capacity of 940 MBWPD. With the right strategy, WWD project can deliver the required waste water disposal capacity safely, effectively, and economically meanwhile it also complies with the company and government regulations, and supports production increase.
