Converting waste cooking oil into biodiesel, the successful continuous improvement in Tangguh LNG

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 38th Ann. Conv., 2014

Tangguh LNG facility in Papua Barat province has a reputation as a world class LNG producer. One part of the Operating vision is Continuous Improvement (CI) to continuously improve the safety, reliability and reduce waste. There is a big challenge to reduce the logistical cost for material shipping in and out of Tangguh that located in remote location, which has put this into high focus for CI initiative. Any waste that can be reduced, re-used or converted into valuable products will be subject to CI effort. An example of business logistical issue with environmental impact is waste cooking oil (WCO) which is produced regularly when preparing circa 2000 meals/day at Tangguh LNG site. Shipping cooking oil for catering to Tangguh and then shipping back the WCO product to West Java for environmentally safe disposal is taking approximately 3000 km round trip. This is inefficient logistical loop, creating operation complexity, cost and risks. This is a big challenge for One Team Tangguh to solve the problem through CI tool. SKK Migas as Oil and Gas Regulatory Body has been interested in Tangguh’s CI to convert WCO into valuable products (biodiesel). The biodiesel product has met with the SNI (Indonesian National Standard) requirements and has been utilized as vehicle fuel for 5 cars in Tangguh site with blending proportion of 30:70 for biodiesel and fossil diesel fuel respectively. The success of producing biodiesel from WCO is a form of Tangguh’s commitment to efficiently implement the environmental management system through 4 R’s approach of waste management (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recovery) resulting in waste minimization, cost reduction, new green energy and also building new capability into the Site team. In addition to producing LNG and condensate, Tangguh LNG is also producing BioDiesel OneTeam Tangguh (BiDOTT) and spanning green technology throughout the company.
