ertamina Sobat Bumi: Reviving and Integrating Corporate Social Responsibility Platform to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS)

As key actor in Indonesia’s energy industry, Pertamina commit to continuously improve its community and development programs aiming to create added value for its beneficiaries. In 2011, Pertamina introduced Sobat Bumi, a program under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda. The goal of the program is consistent with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) targets. Each project was tailored for each region across Indonesia based on the local context. Pertamina practiced an inclusive consultation to determine each location’s priority indicators and targets, involving all relevant stakeholders including the government and civil society. Since 2011, various projects under the Sobat Bumi platform have been conducted. Beasiswa Sobat Bumi produced nation-wide effort to develop competitiveness of future generations through formal and vocational education opportunities (MDGs 2). Thousands of people has benefited by Pertamina Sehati project with its outstanding performance in empowering women, improving maternal health and reducing infant mortality rates (MDGs 3, 4, 5, 6). Pertamina also showed its leadership in environmental protection with 100 Juta Pohon (Hundred Million Trees) project as a part of national 1 billion trees program (MDGs 7). In addition, Pertamina has endorsed and invested in more than 100.000 entrepreneurs to establish Small Medium Enterprises (SME) through Kemitraan Pertamina, ensuring job creation and poverty reduction (MDGs 1). Pertamina also acknowledge recent transition from MDGs which will be expired in 2015 to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals as new guidelines in reviving its CSR programs. The new 17 goals will provide clear and specific structure for Pertamina to integrate the Global Goals with it’s CSR framework. All of those efforts conducted by Pertamina are not simply to comply with the Indonesian regulations or to improve its reputation, the company believe that successful CSR programs are prerequisites to achieve its vision to be global player with sustainable practices.
