Increase Gas Well Reliability Through The Installation of Temporary Modular Portable Clamp-On Electric Heat Trace to Avoid Ice Block / Icing Wellhead At Start Up

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 46th Ann. Conv., 2022

The gas well has many safety devices installed on wellhead such as pressure sensors, which have set the High-High (HH) set point parameters which can cause SDV to close. The “HH” often occurs due to icing on the wellhead when opening the well for the first time. The icing phenomenon occurs due to the sudden and excessive release of heat when the gas first flows which causes cold around the choke. Besides that, the presence of water in the fluid causes the formation of an ice blocking and the gas flow stops. This is the main reason for active safety devices and dead wells. Temporary Modular Portable Clamp-On Electric Heat Trace is an innovation in the form of a tool that functions to avoid icing on the wellhead when the well is first opened. The main equipment needed includes a heat trace cable and clamp modification housing. Initially, the power source from the portable generator is connected to the Heat Trace, after which it is installed in the wings tube when the well is first opened, the heat generated in the device will minimize the sudden release of heat when the gas starts flowing. This is done to prevent the formation of ice blocks around the choke area and the wellhead wings tube that can block the flow of gas. The result : Remove icing. Easy operation because it uses a heat source from VAC electricity, small power heat trace (20 W/meter) and a maximum temperature of 60 Celsius, so doesn't require heat sources such as steam or hot oil. Does’nt require major modifications such as pipes modification (double pipes) or tapping for glycol injections because the installation is only temporary, namely 20-30 minutes before the gas well start-up and then can removed again. Cheap cost (25$/30 meters)
