Insights into the tectonics of eastern Indonesia from ArafuraSPAN, a long-offset long-record 2D seismic reflection dataset

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 34th Ann. Conv., 2010

This paper debuts the initial results of the ArafuraSPAN interpretation project, which stretches from near Tangguh into the Seram Trough to the Weber Deep, and across Tarera-Aiduna fault zone and the Aru Trough onto the Arafura shelf to the Australian border, ending in the outer Bonaparte Basin. The seismic data image the deep crust over a large part of the eastern Banda arc and its northward sweep into the eastern Seram-Aru area. It clearly images the interaction of the young Tarera-Aiduna Fault Zone and the frontal Seram thrust belt, the transpressive zone of partitioned deformation along the southern edge of the Birds Head. It shows the internal structure of the deep pull-apart structures in the Aru Trough, and shows them to be related to right-lateral deformation, which is overlain at its south extremity by emplacement of the Bandaaccretionary prism. The survey images basementgeology on the Arafura platform, and the transitionfrom the Seram thrust belt southward into the Weber deep. This area of eastern Indonesia is clearly undergoing a rapid tectonic re-arrangement, with the T-A fault zone propagating westward, presumably to connect eventually to structures west of the Birds Head.
