Integrating new technologies in earth modeling and effective validation workflows for a large mature field in Indonesia: Minas field case study

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 35th Ann. Conv., 2011

The new Full-Field Earth Model (FFEM) for one of the largest Indonesian fields operated by Chevron Pacific Indonesia was constructed to better define stratigraphic and petrophysical heterogeneity in order to improve reservoir forecasting through water flooding and EOR. The main improvements over the previous models are (1) Robust petrophysical transforms, (2) Detailed full field review of all data, (3) Recognition of clinoforms, tidal erosion and local valleys, and (4) Deployment of state of the art model construction techniques. The improved FFEM incorporated comprehensive geologic stratigraphic interpretations as well as updated petrophysical property advancements that provided the base business and EOR project with a reliable development and forecasting tool. An evolving geostatistical workflow for an “evergreen property modeling methodology was developed and tested for reservoir mapping, well-planning and optimizing infill locations.Combining the FFEM with detailed flow simulation studies is a powerful framework for conditioning to data that cannot be linearly integrated in a geostatistical framework. Prior to scale-up and simulation, a thorough validation of the FFEM was executed. Understanding business needs and simulation requirements helped to expedite the validation of the FFEM. Validation is crucial for a high quality and reliable simulation model. Tools and processes were developed in-house to validate earth models efficiently and within reasonable time frames. The successful validation of the FFEM has been attributed to four main keys: (1) Detailed documentation of geology, petrophysics, modeling assumptions and methodology, (2) Comparison of bulk pore volumes and in-place numbers to booked values and to previous models, (3) Adherence to wireline data within acceptable tolerance and (4) Observance of major reservoir trends and field data. The article will highlight the synergy developed among different team disciplines to create a robust validated earth model that can be promoted to a representative business model for field development.
