Integration of 2D Analog and 3D High Resolution Seismic Data for Regional Shallow Overburden Description in Tangguh Field, Indonesia

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 42nd Ann. Conv., 2018

The 2016 Tangguh Integrated Regional Survey marked a departure from standard site-survey acquisition for BP Indonesia at the Tangguh gas fields in Papua Barat. A large regional survey was acquired, rather than a number of smaller surveys around individual drilling locations. This large analogue and digital survey spans the range of offshore development activity for the forthcoming Tangguh Train 3 expansion project. The wide variety of seismic and sub-bottom profiler data available (from low resolution but high penetration regular 3D seismic, to high resolution but low penetration Pinger data) allows different scales of subsurface imaging to be compared. Integration of different datasets leads to a complete description of the subsurface. Regional shallow overburden description will be presented using two main datasets: 2D Sparker and 3D High Resolution seismic, resulting in a refined understanding of the shallow geology of the Late Miocene-Pliocene Steenkool formation and the Quaternary Sele formation. Coherency and Spectral Decomposition attributes from the 3D High Resolution Seismic data, with integration of 2D Sparker data has begun to uncover the detailed internal features of the formations. The shallow marine Lower Steenkool formation has a high concentration of shallow gas in the western part of the area, associated with shallow fault trends. The fluvial-deltaic Upper Steenkool formation has a stack of coal layers concentrated in the eastern part of the area. The base of the Sele formation is characterized by distinctive braided-stream deposits, where it overlies the Steenkool in an unconformable relationship, followed by channelized sands and shales. Recent deposition in Bintuni Bay is related to the evolution of the modern-day channel system.
