Tunu, Tambora and Handil fields are situated on Delta Mahakam, as major contributors to the oil and gas production of the region. These were developed since the Nineties: more than 1500 wells have been drilled and more than 80 new wells are drilled every year. Most of the wells are located on a bi-slot platform and connected to a Gathering and Testing Satellite (GTS) for production. One GTS consists of 10 to 20 wells.At the beginning, Drilling and Production Simultaneous Operations (SIMOPS) were considered as a downgraded mode of operation, because all wells in the same GTS were shut in and no well intervention activities allowed when drilling operations were ongoing. However, since 2007, SIMOPS gradually became unavoidable and turned into a routine type of job due to the necessity to reduce the delay between drilling and producing a well and to optimise the overall oil and gas delivery. Drilling and Production SIMOPS thus became a normal way of working.This paper will describe how to manage SIMOPS in a safe manner, in particular the different steps to be reviewed: procedures, coordination between different entities, a systematically detailed Job Risk Assessment (JRA), on-site management.As a conclusion, SIMOPS between Well Construction and Production in the Delta Mahakam fields is achievable and very profitable, not always a win-win situation for all entities involved but maximising production while drilling can be done. And more important, it has proved that it can be done safely.
