Material Selection Optimization Leads Significant Cost Saving in South S Field Drilling Campaign Central Sulawesi

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 46th Ann. Conv., 2022

S Field which consist of North S and South S is located in Central Sulawesi. The S field had gas discovery through successful drilling exploration well on 1999-2007. Currently there are 4 wells in the South S field with the temporary abandonment status. As part of the South S field development, 4 New Wells and 4 Reentry Wells will be included in the next drilling campaign. South S field has a sour downhole environment, same as North S field however with lower composition of H2S & CO2, the existence of those impurities could promote corrosion, thus chrome material is required for the tubular, completion equipment, and wellhead & X-tree. The material selection study had been done for North S field when it was developed on 2012, and the result is Modified 13Cr 95. South S field had an option to use the same material because its downhole condition is less sour than North S field, it would save the material study cost. However, after reviewing the historical study, reservoir condition and H2S & CO2 content of the South S, potential material optimization could be achieved and would give a significant cost saving. So it was decided to conduct the material selection study for South S field. The objective of South S material study was to get the optimum material, means lower grade and lower cost but can withstand the well sour condition by testing the performance of two material grades, API 13Cr L80 and Modified 13Cr 95. The study was consist of 4 main activities, namely material properties testing, field data review & thermodynamic modeling, corrosion testing and SSC testing. At the end of the study, both of the material passed the tests and API 13Cr L80 is the fit for purpose option to be used.
