Palynostratigraphy and Paleoenvironment of the Triassic Kanikeh Formation, Seram Island, Indonesia

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 43rd Ann. Conv., 2019

A palynological study of the Kanikeh Formation of Seram Island has been carried out in order to review and update its stratigraphic framework. The 39 outcrop samples had been taken from 10 sections in Seram Island. Sediment preparation was done in adherence to the standard methods. The examination of the processed samples was carried out with light microscope at 400X magnification. The results of palynological investigation yielded six palynomorphs associations ranging in age from lower Triassic to early Jurassic. Palynological assemblages from the Kanikeh Formation contains striate-bisaccate palynomorphs that only present at Permian - Triassic age, some of monosulcate pollen and some spores that present until the Jurassic age. The six assemblages respectively from the oldest to the youngest are A, B, C, D, E and F. All of the paleoenvironment of the palynomorphs assemblages is supratidal except the assemblage of A where the paleoenvironment is intertidal.
