Petroleum System Potential of Lofin and Banggoi Area, Seram Island

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 42nd Ann. Conv., 2018

Bula Oil Field has stratigraphic characteristics of Pliocene-Pleistocene age hydrocarbon plays in the north-east part of Seram Island. Many oil seeps have been found along Bula-Nief-Kola areas also with the presence of hydro-sulfur gas. The hydrocarbon trap of the Bula Field contains sand and channel bars that show intercalation between middle-coarse grain sandstones and conglomerates with a small number of faults as migration part of petroleum system. Another field, the Oseil Field has a Triassic-Jurassic age hydrocarbon play. A lot of wells have been discoveries and show oil potential. Many publications state that the Manusela Formation is considered as the potential reservoir and Kanikeh Formation as the potential source rock with thrust fault planes as part of the migration path of the petroleum system in Seram Island. Both Pliocene-Pleistocene and Triassic-Jurassic petroleum plays that spread along Seram Island with NW-SE trends indicate good opportunities for additional fields. Both petroleum plays at Bula Field and Oseil Field could be key analogues to other potential area such as Banggoi and Lofin. The methods of this study comprised detailed geological mapping with measured sections, collection of rock samples followed by laboratory analysis (general and organic petrography, ICP-MS, XRF, macro and micropaleontology, paleomagnetic, palynology, organic geochemistry) as well as interpretation of subsurface geology by using residual gravity, seismic, and well data of Lofin and Banggoi. Both of these areas have been considered as prospective of petroleum based on residual gravity data indicating interesting gravity anomalies. A seismic profile with W-E trend proves that there are two antiforms which support the anomaly of residual gravity. Based on seismic interpretation, there are three boundary sequences such as Top Manusela Formation, Top Kola Shale, and Top Kanikeh Formation. This study points towards new directions for further exploration in Lofin and Banggoi Area, both Cenozoic and Pre-Cenozoic objectives could be exploration targets.
