Reactivate Low Productivity Wells in Brownfield with Sandstone Acid Stimulation

Production optimization effort in brownfield is required to extend the economic producing life of the field using cost-effective and low-risk technologies. Well stimulation is generally proposed to enhance well productivity which are grouped into hydraulic fracturing and matrix acidizing treatment. The proven well stimulation technology in sandstone formation is hydraulic fracturing. It has been widely applied in Medco to improve well productivity in low permeability reservoirs, especially in tight sandstone formation. More than a hundred wells have been stimulated by fracturing stimulation technique with good result. Hydraulic fracturing in multi-layer reservoirs may have risk of fracture growth to other layers that have been water-out and also considered as very costly operation and became less economic in brownfield. Sandstone acid stimulation is evaluated as alternative economic solution. Sandstone acid stimulation is commonly proposed to improve well productivity by removing siliceous particles such as clay, feldspar, and quartz fine that may cause near-wellbore damage. This paper shares case study, how to develop acid stimulation strategy covering guideline in acid selection and stimulation treatment in South Sumatra Block. Initial oil gain was more than 300BOPD from 2 wells that were treated with acid stimulation. Oil cumulative is 22.6 MMBO and still counting.
