Resolving Gas Turbine Vibration Through In-House HSSE, Asset Integrity (AI) and Process Safety Management

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 43rd Ann. Conv., 2019

Corrosion and fouling or scaling can cause the destruction of piping and equipment and fatalities through Vapour Cloud Explosions (VCE) from hydrocarbon leaks, vacuum vessel collapse from spill fires beneath the vessels, uncontrolled internal pipe leaks and vibration. Corrosion and scaling can occur in the water or gas phase. Water can be formation water or water of condensation. Whether or not corrosion products form depends on the composition of ions dissolved in water, temperature, pressure, pH, CO2 gas, H2S and bacterial activity. Gas Turbine Compressors (GTC) have an important role in gas processing to export gas to other facilities. The GTC; have experienced increasing vibration and ineffective performance, caused fouling or deposits in the GTC. These deposits originated from the three phase Separator upstream of the GTC. This evaluation used in-house HSSE (Health - Safety - Security Environment), Asset Integrity and Process Safety Management. The evaluation method consisted of identification, documentation, maintenance and verification of technical, organizational, procedural barriers and next-step recommendation including monitoring, mitigation and operational activities. The aim was to reduce the risk of a major accident by controlling major accident hazards by ensuring that all equipment functions and operates properly with appropriate and safe procedures. The main conclusion from the study is that the water composition indicates a tendency to form corrosive products as seen in piping section upstream of GTC. For the Separator and Compressor area, the expected probability leak frequency is between 6E-04 to 8E-03 per year, which is a medium or tolerable risk. For Jet / Spray Fires, the risk is also medium, whereby the likelihood is unlikely but the consequence is catastrophic. Actions taken to reduce the corrosion rate and vibration were to add a new corrosion inhibitor injection point downstream of the Separator, to coat the GTC impeller, and to monitor the effectiveness of the control used for the Asset Integrity Management System (AISY) software, which is used as an input for the annual corrosion management plan.
