Review of pattern steam injection in Duri Field, Sumatra

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 8th Ann. Conv., 1979

The Duri Field, one of 53 fields operated by P.T. Caltex Pacific Indonesia (CPI) in Central Sumatra, contained about 6.0 billion barrels of oil in place originally. Because primary recovery will yield only 7.4 percent of this oil, enhanced recovery techniques are attractive. On September 27, 1975 CPI started steam injection into a field test area in the Duri Field, Central Sumatra. Through December 1978 CPI had injected 12.3 million barrels of water as steam into 16 wells of the nine contiguous five-spot test. Some 1.75 million barrels of additional oil had been produced. The purposes of the test were to determine operating problems and develop sufficient accurate data to determine economics for expanded, fieldwide pattern steam injection in Duri Field. Steam injection can mobilize a significant part of the remaining 5.7 billion barrels of 157cps oil in place, however, to data, we do not have enough performance data to determine if expansion would result in favorable economics. This papaer will cover background of the test, implementation in the field and performance.
