Stratal Elements of Sand Body Geometry in the Tanjung Formation - Southern Barito Basin, Kalimantan

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 43rd Ann. Conv., 2019

Detail of comprehensive sedimentology, stratigraphy and biostratigraphy analyses of Tanjung Formation were carried out to build the paleogeography interpretation of the Tapin Areas. The methodology for the study included the sedimentology description and stratigraphy modeling for the individual outcrop that consisted of (a) detail measured section of outcrops, (b) correlation of stratotype in 2D, (c) 3D correlation model of sections, (d) block diagram environment interpretation. The study was carried out over a 27 (twenty seven) stratigraphic profiles from which we could identify the geometry of the sand bodies and provide an analogue for the subsurface condition of the Tanjung reservoir in the Southern Barito Basin. This study was focused on the sedimentological characteristic of Tanjung Formation such as lithological composition, sedimentary structure and trace fossil. There are 6 (six) depositional elements interpreted in the area which are (1) fluvial channel deposit, (2) tidal channel deposit, (3) swampy marsh deposit, (4) crevasse splay deposit, (5) intertidal deposit. The fluvial channel to swampy marsh deposit comprised of coarse grain to pebbly sandstone which are associate with the inverse graded and normal graded bedding, cross stratification. Locally poly - modal grain clast, thick bedded coal seam, mudstone and paleo-soil were also found. On the other hand the tidal channel deposit was characterized by medium grain sandstone with wavy and cross bedding sedimentary structures. The crevasse splay to lateral bars composed of mud drapes, silt lenses laminae sandstone, shale lamination mudstone, thinly bedded of calcareous medium grain sandstone with associated cross bedding wavy lamination and burrows. The intertidal facies was deposited at the basinal margin and it was dominated by calcareous mudstone. Moreover, to support the interpretation of the hydrocarbon presence in the area a microseepage survey is recommended to identify the prospectivity in the Southern Barito Basin.
