The Cenozoic of Java and Sumatra

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 1st Ann. Conv., 1972

In this paper a synopsis of our stratigraphic and paleogeographic knowledge of the Cenozoic in Java and in North and South Sumatra is attempted and submitted to criticism. These areas were studied by a LEMIGAS/BEICIP team of geologists, geophysicists and stratigraphers. Correlations are mainly based on planktonic and larger foraminifera, and the smaller benthonics were helpful in, interpreting the depositional environment. The data on Java were compiled by Wibisono and P. Baumann whilst the part on Sumatra was written by Suminta and H. Oesterle. The stratigraphic results are presented on five idealized cross sections. The planktonic zonation has been chosen as vertical scale and it is stressed that this scale has no relation to the actual thickness of the sediments. Moreover certain formations are projected on the sections, and only a selection of formation names is mentioned.
