The discovery and development of the Petapahan oil field, Central Sumatra

The Petapahan oil field is located about 60 km west of Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau Province and just north of Tapung Kiri River in Central Sumatra. The field covers approximately 1300 ha or 3200 acres within the Pertamina - P.T. Caltex Pacific Indonesia Contract of Work Area. At the end of 1973, 17 wells had been drilled in the field with 2 dry holes. Of the remaining 15 wells, 12 are on production and 3 are shut in, awaiting production testing. Production of 33° API Gravity oil is obtained from three separate sandstone reservoirs at the rate of approximately 40,000 bbl per day. Cumulative production to 31 December 1973 was 14.7million bbl of oil.
