A major NE-SE alignment of basement topography on the Late Cretaceous surface, governed the deposition of the transgressive Talang Akar Formation and the Baturaja Formation in South Sumatra. These formations, which were deposited during the same transgressive cycle, contain the main petroleum accumulations in the area. Their prospectivity is to a large extent dependent on reservoir character and contact with adjacent potential source rocks.Commercial gas has been discovered within the Baturaja Formation of Kuang, Pagar Dewa, Beringin, Ogan, Betung and Musi. In these areas, the prospective Baturaja Formation is present as calcareous buildups lying directly on Pre-Tertiary basement, with intervention of thin Talang Akar sediments and Lahat Formation volcanics in some areas. This relationship can be seen clearly on seismic sections. In this paper, seismic data is used extensively in the discussion of the hydrocarbon prospects of the Baturaja Formation.
