Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 9th Ann. Conv., 1980

The Sanga-Sanga field is located in the onshore Mahakam delta area of south east Kalimantan, approximately 60 kilometers south of the Equator and ninety kilometers north of the town of Balikpapan. (Refer to Figure 1). The field was discovered in 1898 and has produced to date over 255 million barrels of oil. The field which is over 32 kilometers long, but rarely exceeds one kilometer in width, has been developed and delineated by a total of 91 1 wells.Tesoro Indonesia Petroleum Company farmed into a rehabilitation contract covering several areas in east Kalimantan in 1971, which included the Sanga-Sanga area. Tesoro commenced operations in Sanga-Sanga in late 1973 and took over complete control of operations in 1974.The purpose of this paper is firstly to describe the Sanga-Sanga field from a geological and petroleum/reservoir engineering viewpoint, secondly to describe Tesoro's attempts to reactivate and extend the field and finally to indicate some of the problems that are encountered in attempting to revitalize a marginal field, economically.
