Upgrading Process Gas Compressors To Zero Emission Shaft Seals

Proceedings Title : Proc. Indon. Petrol. Assoc., 47th Ann. Conv., 2023

Typical emissions of process gas compressors/shaft seals, gas like methane need to get flared and generate emissions to atmosphere. Zero emission solutions for existing equipment and new machines, new concept to avoid gas to be flared with zero emission seal. The main objective is to protect the environment and decarbonize for a sustainable future. This paper discusses options to stop process gas emission related to the shaft seals installed and machine venting, relevant for new machines but also as upgrade option of existing machines. Some success stories are provided to support the main idea and the potential to be applied in oil & gas industries, as well as, other industries, which are utilizing machines with potential emissions. The operator faced a corresponding amount of Work when, after commissioning the natural gas compressors, the separation seals were not performing properly. Bearing oil reached the seal chamber and contaminated the dry gas seals, which resulted in multiple seal failures. This situation forced the operator to carry out an extensive maintenance program for the seals and to replace them every two years as a preventive measure, as the compressors could not be shut down from October to April. This entailed high costs while there was still a certain potential for errors. Our customer decided to have the sealing solution completely over¬hauled and commissioned EagleBurgmann to develop a reliable sealing concept.
